Please see the CMUD Information for zMUD users FAQ for more about this. But this is standard software industry practice. The long-time users have gotten the most value from their purchase. Recent customers might feel more upset for spending money on something and then immediately having new software come out. With the majority of other software companies, discounts are typically only provided for people using the most recent version, or who purchased within the past few months. In fact, giving out free versions to people who bought something a year ago, and giving half price discounts back 7 years is almost unheard of.
Chiara and I have a family to support and bills to pay. This is our full-time job. We can't pay bills by giving away everything for free. We considered not having any discounts at all, but wanted to show our appreciation to zMUD users in *some* way. But we can't stay in business by giving discounts to everyone, and most zMUD/CMUD users would rather that we stayed in business and continued to improve MUD software. |
I am not looking for something for nothing here and I do realize that you have bills to pay as we all do. I guess where my confusion lies is if you going to offer a discount to past customers offer it to them all or don't offer one. This of course is just my opinion as one consumer and I may be in the minority however it's the way I feel none the less. |

As I said, it was a business issue. We couldn't afford to offer the discount to everyone. Instead of offering *no* discount, we choose a cutoff date. Sure, we could have just decided not to offer any discounts at all. But I'm sure there are thousands of people who are happy that we did. And again, like I said in that previous posts, issuing discounts for your most recent customers is a standard practice in the software industry. Most every company offers a discount for customers of the prior version. Since zMUD upgrades were free, the concept of "prior version" doesn't apply, so we choose purchase date instead.

I'm sorry I just don't see the logic in this. |
With your logic, you should get equal discount compared to your cars age when buying a new one. The older, the more discount.
Sorry, but thats not how the world spinns. You are not loyal customer if you have bought one product from the firm past 10 years. If you buy one each year, they you are.
Zugg, have you tought about changing the (short) name of the product for less missleading? Because i'm quite sick of listening "how do i play this zMud?". We are not playing zMUD or cMUD, but using Chiara's MUD Client to connect to our MUD's. Maybe change the short name to CC/CMC/CMUDC and get rid of the missleading? |

The email I received tells me that I bought zMUD over four and a half years ago - unlike some other people, I'm going to thank Zugg and Chiara for giving me four and a half years of consistent, quality updates for my measly 17 quid or so. I remember when I first found zMUD while on a quest for a new client. I'd had bad experiences with shareware software being of very poor quality in general, and restricting many of the features that were included to registered users only. I was very pleasantly surprised with zMUD and (admittedly against my better judgement) bought the software before the trial even ran out.
I've never regretted buying zMUD - I've come to expect quality from Zuggsoft and I had no qualms at all about buying CMUD; I know I'll be getting a quality product. Or what will be one when all the bugs are worked out :P . Case in point, I managed to break the discount for CMUD by getting dropped out of Paypal - it took less than two hours, in what was the middle of the night in my timezone at least, to have my issue turned around with no hassle at all. Call it hubris, but I'm actually happy and a bit proud to think that I've personally helped put bread in the mouths (or new electronics in the homes of, the way Zugg's luck is running ) of the people that make it possible.
Thanks for letting us have so many updates gratis, Zugg, and thankyou for developing something new for us. Here's to many more years, and many more updates that I can rely on to be worth my lovely money. |

Actually he could have offered discounts to every Zmud customer, but that'd require setting the initial buy-in price at twice what it is now. That'd suck for new customers and thus us, because more customers equals more money, equals more updates. |
