WIll this work?
 
#show %item( %subchar( %word( "Announce: Read 1365/1366 articles.", 3)), "/", "|"),1)

To me, this should show 1365. Why is it not?
Im actually going to replace "Announce: Read 1365/1366 articles." with %selline, but I put an actual line in there to so someone will be able to tell what im trying to do

I fixed it by taking a ), *blush* new problem, do I have to convert the number 1365 to a actual number instead of a string before I can do something like
#ad 1 number
???

No, it seems to already be an actual number. You will have to get the #ADD command right, though.
#VAR number %item( %subchar( %word( "Announce: Read 1365/1366 articles.", 3), "/", "|"),1)
#AD number 1
