Traduct a mud
 
Hi,im starting to think about traducting a mud,which would actually traduct all muds of same languaje,i mean,when a word comes to the screen,make zmud imput the traducted word (in spanish) instead of english one.
Its a hard work so id like to ask for someone with experiencie to tell me how should i start...
The main questions are,how can i make zmud use the same colour of the word untraducted and the traducted one,and the comand to use.

Of course,when i finish the traduction,ill send it to zuggsoft if they want it.

I think you mean 'translate' ?

And you want to translate all text that comes from the mud into another language? Or just the ones that the user types in? In any case, the best way would be to write a zMUD plugin, as translating every line using triggers will probably slow it down too much.

I dont understand your question about colours, can you give an example what it should look like?

Yes i meaned translate,sorry for my english ^^

What i meaned with colours,is,for example,when a mud with colours tell me that i need to drink water,it imputs in blue,so if i translate it,i want zmud to translate it in blue colour too :)

I meaned to translate all text,i know its a hard work... but i have time to do it :)

Perhaphs it is slow...

arg i forgot to end the last phrase,i meaned that it can be slow... on slow computers,i have a pentium 4 so i dont care 2 mutch about that :P

You can use %ansi to output text in colour, try reading the entry in the help file.

To do the translating, you will need one or more stringlists each that contain every word in each language you want to translate.

For instance:

@Spanish.nouns -- gato|casa|helado|ensalada|etc
@English.nouns -- cat|house|ice cream|salad|etc

Spanish verbs are rather tricky, since they have so many conjugated forms:

@Spanish.verbprefix -- habl|cant|lav|and
@spanish.verbsuffix -- amos|a|as|(repeat for e, i, o, and u)

@English.verbprefix -- speak|sing|wash|walk
@English.verbsuffix -- ing|s|es|ed

Anywho, you have to figure out what word matched in one stringlist and then get the word in the same position in the other stringlist.

As for color, I'm not sure if you can specificly capture the color info, but you could perhaps make a stringlist containing all the ansi color-code combos and use that to keep track of the color--I'm not familiar with ansi triggers, though, so I don't know if you can capture the color info or if you'll just have to make a trigger that matches specific/all colors and does something like %ansi(%1) for the coloring.

A major problem you run into with word for word translation is that grammar differs from language to language. Another is homonyms which aren't homonyms in the other language. Bank->river bank, Bank->rack of chained batteries, Bank->where my checking account is. Or, more dangerously, "Hit me" while standing at a blackjack table

You need context (surrounding words, and sometimes previous/following sentences) to pick the correct translation.

It's probably better to compile standard complete action triggers for the mud:

(%w) smiles at (%w).
(%w) leaves to the (%w).

etc.

and substitute the entire chunk of text.

Actually,i dont know what do i have to put on the pattern and what on the value to make zmud use the translated words instead of the english words.

Then you should learn how to make Triggers and such, before you start such a big project.

In my opinion, this is something for a plugin to do. A plugin has the lowest possible access to the MUD output, besides the zMUD executable itself (and of course, intercepting the incomming text before it even gets to zMUD). Using this method, preserving the colors is a whole lot easier. Also, I suggest that you look around at current translation programs and see if any of those provide a COM interface. If so, translating would just be a matter of parsing each sentence and sending it on to the translating program.
