Intellectual property rights must be respected.
With that in mind:
Option 1
Leverage AI to optimize the existing codebase—adapting it for new operating systems and 4K displays, eliminating various stability-related bugs, and adding support for character sets (such as GBK, though UTF-8 support would be ideal). Release CMUD4 as an update, charging a fee of $9.99. This would bring back a large number of legacy users and generate commercial revenue. I’d bet good money that people would pay for it.
Option 2
Start from scratch.
Mike Potter possesses the core design philosophy behind CMUD. While his programming skills may be exceptional, they might not stand out quite as much when compared against modern AI tools. (I recently saw a claim on YouTube—perhaps a bit of an exaggeration—that many senior programmers at Microsoft and Google no longer write code themselves.)
Abandon proprietary commercial components and embrace the open-source community. Shed the baggage of the past. With the powerful assistance of AI, launch an entirely new CMUD4.
It would feature native UTF-8 support, support for mounting various character sets, compatibility with modern operating systems, and potentially cross-platform support. It would boast a superior UI design, retain the robust capabilities of ZScript, and perhaps even offer native support for Lua.
Build it, open-source it, and set up a donation channel.
It may be unrealistic to expect Mike Potter to devote his full time and energy to updating CMUD; however, consider this: if he were to utilize a few AI agents to offload 90% of the repetitive grunt work—requiring him only to contribute his most valuable asset: his "ideas"—he could effectively bring CMUD up to date. Why wouldn't he?
One additional suggestion: If the plan is *not* to open-source the project, CMUD4 should ideally offer users a three-month trial period to gather extensive feedback before the official release. |

Honestly, I'd be pretty cool with Option 1. In fact, I'd do it twice, and here's why:
I'm still using Zmud and Cmud at the same time. I have been using Z for my administrative accounts and C for my player accounts. For some reason in the last 18 months or so MS pushed out an update (I am on Windows 10) that causes Z to do a complete process hang whenever you attempt to close a window. Session window, alias/trigger window, it doesn't matter. If you try to close it, BAM, process hang. It is infuriating.
If they were to reengineer things to be a bit more now-friendly, especially if they had a linux port option (so I could open my map and databases in *nix setups without crashing) I would pay even twice that and not feel bad about it. I know there are other clients available, and most of my players use them, but I don't like the other clients. The map setup I use is just about perfect with all the per-room scripting necessary for elevators or other automated features, the quick setup of different aliases, color profiles, etc. It's just insanely convenient. I don't have the exact dates handy, but I'd swear I've been using Z since the '90s at some point, and picked up C a good bit later. It was one of those things I started using at first just to see if it was better than TinTin or whatever other garbage I'd had back on a VAX/VMS college server, and then it stuck, and after a while I realized how amazing it was and paid up to register.
All those years, all different computers, the different operating systems, but everything in my power to preserve my same installation configuration the whole time, even when I migrated the play accounts to C. The desire for a newer/updated version is even moreso because I know who my money would be going to for it, and every time in the past I've had any significant issues, including my ISP having shut down and needing to recover my account/registration access, Chiara's been extremely helpful to jump in and make sure things are resolved. I've gotten far more than my money's worth over the last 2+ decades, and I'd like to have a reason to give them a bit more.
I'd give up Z entirely and go to a double-C client system setup if it supports multiple copies running at the same time (from different install folders) - I've honestly never even checked to see if that works, but it would let me get past most of the current problems. A new CMUD with dark mode and per-window zoom settings (due to higher resolution displays) could be exceptionally nice. |

You can run multiple instances from the same install folder
I have never tried multiple installations, though. |

I'd love to see upgrades, especially those which address the TERRIBLE window management and functionality. Eg., moving buttons is something I WANT to do but cannot deal with the headache of the button doing incredibly f*cked-up things to the display where the button moved is WAAAAAY over to one side of nowhere. Or have different fonts in different windows (if this is already a thing I cannot find the setting).
Or, at last, having the map & database fixed, or even have the ability to use dbvars as well as/instead of the other, broken, thing.
I have no real desire to use anything else as the mapper really is the stand-out feature. |

Fonts in windows is a thing, via the styles tab.
Click in the window you want to change the preferences of before clicking prefs to ensure you are editing the right file.
It should mention the window name along the title bar of the popup window.
dbvars (aka json variables) work fine as well, though the oracle based database, not so much. |
