What it takes |
As I look through many of the posts and problems that people have I see alot of Official Zmud Guru's. Then I see LightBulb and ToneDining(please be spelt right), they seem to handle a good percentage of most of these problems, and yet they arent Guru's. My questions is, shouldn't they be? Unless they don't want to be or unless Zugg just gives out this title to people he knows personally or people who work on coding Zmud itself? I think there should be some sort of way to show appreciation to all of the help these guys give, if it is only by giving them some title.
Just some wild random thoughts,

The Guru process is subjective. Not to mention it being a long process - it's usually debated for weeks. Many are nominated, few are approved. It's nothing personal and I agree, there ought to be more appreciation for the great contributions made by the outstanding people here. As I said though, it's subjective and a long process.
We'll see what develops.

There are advantages to being unofficial. Nothing I suggest is stamped
with authority. I can suggest, flop, fail, digress, rant and submit
concepts as a private forum citizen.
Answering many of the bulk forum questions free's up the Guru's time to figure
out the tough stuff.
After leeching zMud scripts for what seems like forever (it continues)
nothing like giving back something to the community. I, with the rest of
you, paid once for zMud and feel something should be given back for the
free upgrades. I'm besieged by pay X$USD for yearly updates all over the
place. Its nice to have something which doesn't iritate like that.

You know, they are both right. This makes my 335th post and most of those were reposnses telling people somewhat what a script should be. There are times when I want to say, "Get a clue, they only cost $1." Those are generally the times when I stop posting for a few months. I think all of use non-guru epert types go through such periods when the questions asked only irritate. So I would say the main difference between the guru's and the experts is that guru's don't pissed at the silly questions that the help file answers. I see 5 of those in a row and I just stop replying to anything for a few months.
Personally I think Lightbulb shold be given the guru flag if he wants it, he is right on the ball and doesn't seem to get irked by unnecessary questions as easily as most experts. |

Actually Gurus get irked from time to time too. There's a separate forum to vent those stresses. In reflection, some are just hilarious.
Zugg's taken notice of the lack of new gurus lately, and has put out an indication of openness to new nominations from the other Gurus. This is just the start of a sometimes slow process, but it's a start.

First, I'd like to thank Apollyon for the endorsement. It's always nice to be noticed and kind words are always appreciated.
The truth is, I was offered an opportunity to join the Gurus over a year ago. Due to reasons I'd rather not bring up again, it was mutually decided that it wasn't appropriate at that time.
There are many non-Gurus who contribute frequently to the forum and anyone who is a regular reader is certain to recognize their names and the quality of their input. In addition to the names already seen here, MattLofton, Pega, and dacheeba come to mind. I'm sure there are others, also. For the most part, our answers are every bit as good as the Gurus.
Actually, except for Kjata and Darker, the Gurus seem fairly quiet these days. I suspect most of them upgraded to the beta versions back in October or November and have difficulty remembering what will work with v6.16 and what needs the beta version (the same way I feel when someone asks about v5.55 or v4.62). They will probably be much more noticeable once the next public version is released.
Again, thanks for noticing.

There doesn't seem to be that much doing in the forums either, at least not that I get to answer, you're all quicker than me ;)

Heh, Guru's get ticked off too. Sometimes they vent off in the forum Darker was talking about, sometimes they don't. I, myself, have been known in the past to have had a few outbursts, which looking back now, perhaps were somewhat unnecessary, and perhaps I should have thought about it better and take a look at what I was saying. I admit that I have made some mistakes in the past. However, what I'm trying to say is that Guru's are just normal people like all the other posters. The only ones that are above us, mortals, are perhaps Zugg and Chiara. Well, maybe even Darker too, but that is debatable.
Nevertheless, there should be more recognition for some people that perhaps have passed unnoticed in the past. The problem lately has been that, like LightBulb said, some of the other Guru's have been fairly quiet this days, and for someone to be made a Guru, the approval of many of the Guru's is needed. But just like Darker said, perhaps this is the start of a process.
