I keep getting this error and I cannot figure out why.

I am using zMUD on an AMD 2G with 512M RAM, with Windows XP SP2, Home Edition.

We'll need a bit more information to be able to help.

What are you doing when you get the error?
Is there a particular script or alias that's being run - can you reproduce the error?

The error occurs every time I start zMUD. I can reproduce it every time I start the software.

It could be an issue with your character database. Make a backup copy of it and then delete it and see if zMUD runs ok then.
