This was happening to me with an "older" NVidia card. It was happening with anything related to video. I upgraded my video card, and now don't see any of these BSOD crashes. I went from a GeForce 7600 512 RAM to a GeForce 8600 GT (both PCIe). NVidia drivers are very crappy on Vista and don't support the older models very well.

The things that usually cause hard crashes, bsods and stop errors are:
- Overheating, especially if the BSOD or stop error is only displayed for a fraction of a second before the computer shuts down. It does this to make sure your hardware isn't damaged by the heat. You can check the temperatures in the BIOS, and also set the shutdown threshold in there too.
- Memory errors - if your memory is damaged, or your motherboard can't read from or write to it properly for whatever reason, memory corruption can happen, which can cause stop errors.
- Other hardware errors, especially graphics (it always seems to be graphics drivers that cause stop errors for me).
