[1.19] Registry Values For Path Selection

Looking into the registry I see:

HKLM\Software\Zuggsoft\CMUD\DataDir = %DOCUMENTS

... shouldn't that be %DOCUMENTS%\My Games\CMUD ..?

Still, it seems to work when I run CMUD, but it makes me wonder if something is corrupted.

Nope, that's correct. As I said in another post, CMUD has the "My Games\CMUD" part hard coded right now. I might change this soon though. What I need to do is treat it more like environment variable substitution rather than just testing for "%DOCUMENTS" or "%EXEPATH" like it does now.

OK, in v1.20 I have removed the hard-coding of the "My Games\CMUD" part within CMUD. CMUD will now expand the following variables in the DataDir path:

%DOCUMENTS% : User's My Documents folder (\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents)
%APPDATA% : \Documents and Settings\username\Application Data
%COMMON_APPDATA% : \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
%LOCAL_APPDATA% : Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data
%USER% : \Documents and Settings\username
%PROGRAMS% : \Program Files\
%EXEPATH% : The path containing the CMUD.EXE file
%INSTALLPATH% : The path the EXE file was installed to

Currently the installer only uses %DOCUMENTS%\My Games\CMUD or %EXEPATH% for choices (1) and (2) in the installer. Also, CMUD recognizes the backwards compatible settings of just "%DOCUMENTS" or "%EXEPATH" and in the first case, it will add \My Games\MUDs to the end of the path.

In addition, if you use %nnn% where nnn is a number, then this number is used in the call to SHGetSpecialFolderLocation to retrieve a special folder location.

This should provide more than enough flexibility for the installer to handle any future changes that are made because of Vista. The above examples show the default path for Windows XP, but none of these are hardcoded. CMUD uses SHGetSpecialFolderLocation to retrieve the actual folder name, which should allow Vista compatibility with the new directory naming scheme.

Very nice :) Gives us plenty of options to use manually too if we're feeling keen, I was thinking of maybe using %USER%\CMUD since I don't want "My Games" to be backed up to the work server ;)

I feel like I might be missing something here... I installed 1.19 as a clean install (I uninstalled 1.18 and deleted the cmud directory), and selected the my games/cmud option, but when I look for the cmud data files, I find them in the program files/cmud directory. Mind you I run XP, my thought is since I don't have a My games folder in there already, that Cmud doesn't create one... is this the case, or is there still a bug (as it appears zugg indicated this bug or a similar one was fixed with 1.19)? Also, i just uninstalled cmud and reinstalled it after I created a my games directory in my my documents file, and it still didnt create a cmud folder within that directory... Was this already fixed for V1.20? kinda looks like it might be, but I can't quite tell? Also, for whatever it's worth I did my last uninstall while I had Cmud open... Bad idea... (oops) it gave me a canot read cmud.exe error when trying to install. Is it possible to have a check done to see if cmud.exe is in use before the uninstaller tries to remove it? (for braindead sorts such as myself)

My guess is that you still have a registry entry left over from a previous version that is overridding your selection. In v1.20 the Uninstall option should delete the registry keys, but that didn't happen in older versions. I think there was another post about this, but go into RegEdit and go to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Zuggsoft/CMUD entry and delete any DataDir value shown there.

I'll add a check for CMUD running to the installer for v1.21.

OK, so now look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Zuggsoft/CMUD and you should see the DataDir value stored there.

I've been unstalling and re-installing 1.20. each time checking in the hkey_current_user registry looking for the datadir key and didnt find it. Finally I found it under Hkey_local_machine with the %documents%/my games. When I unintstall, it's gone... not there, but when I reinstall 1.20 without having a folder in my documents called my games, I get a crash. When I make a folder called my games in there and re-install it works!

Bah! Apparently when I wrote my fancy routine to expand the various environment variables, I forgot to change one of the MkDir calls to MakePath (my own routine that creates the needed subfolders)

Sigh...well, I guess it's a good thing I'm doing these quick releases. You'll probably see another release today if I make good progress on the button stuff.

And you said it was a one-off when I said that you were cranking them out the other day :P

This is awesome going, Zugg. I'd always known you wrote good software, but the rate you're cranking these things out since you came back from being ill is incredible! Thanks :D

Fang, Crycry
Yeah, my system is pretty much end of line now. Best stuff of yesterday.
Shuttle SFF chassis
Athlon XP 3200+
2 x 1GB RAM (PC3200)
GeForce 6800
19" TFT (back when it was £550)

Only thing that's modern are the two 320GB SATA-II disks

So when it's time to upgrade then it'll be dual screens, quad core, SLI, all the new shiny stuff
Just waiting til mine bites the dust

Mine is:

AMD 64 X2 4400+
4gb pc3200 (because of the limitations of the cpu :()
GF7900GT
2x19" TFT
3x250gb 16mb cache S2 drives.

Not too shabby when I bought it. I'd consider SLIing the cards, but I'd need a new PSU for that and if I'm going to upgrade all that lot I might as well get a new machine. I'll be keeping those hard drives though - they're immensely good value. Less than fifty quid each! I'll probably SLI a couple of 8800GTXs or whatever comes after them though >:)

Quad-core is honestly a waste of time. Unless you do something that really requires it (video or image rendering or something) there's really no justification for it. The games applications of multi-core (rather than dual-core, which definitely does have its benefits) will be minimal for a long time to come. I'm hoping more games will start supporting PhysX and equivalents - it really is powerful stuff.
