loading room exits to a variable

I am working on a script, and I would like to know all of the exits for a specific room. I've been trying to use the %roomexit function, but my mapper consistently recording a "down" exit, becuase the word down is in all of the room descriptions. Long and short of it, rather than using the function, I would like to just use a trigger, and load the exits to a stringlist. The problem is that I can't seem to figure out how to load the variables. The exit string is :
[Exits: north east]

keep in mind there could be up to six exits (u, d, e, w, n, s). I've figured out how to grab the whole list with a trigger pattern of
Exits: &exs~]
but for this example it loads "north east" to a variable rather than north|east in a string list.... any help on doing this would be appreciated.
Thanks a BUNCH, I've been posting a lot here, and have been getting some good tips!
