Zmud not working after version (7.12) was installed

After installing zMUD version 7.12, I got the following error message when I tried to open it (The splash screen opened up for a few moments, then these errors occured):

Access violation at address 74E50B09. Read of address 74E50B09.
Access violation at address 74E50B09. Read of address 74E50B09.

It then came up with:
zMUD has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.

A common error message. It had the normal “Debug” “Send Error Report” “Don’t Send” buttons at the bottom. If I click “Don’t Send” it just repeats the message. If I click Debug it just shuts down and doesn’t open again. zMud isnt open on the Task Manager either.

I use Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. Version 2002. Service Pack 2. 1.67 GHz. 224 MB of RAM.

I reinstalled it to a new directory and it installed, converted, and then failed to work again. Same error messages. I still have the install file for 7.11 and i reinstalled it, and its working fine now. Since, as i understand it, the 7.12 update was rather minor, I'm rather lucky in that regard.

I'm getting similar problems. Lots of access violations when opening characters or new windows using the #win command. 7.11a seemed fine, but since running the upgrade to 7.12 this morning I'm seeing problems. Nothing else on my system has changed since 7.05, 7.10, 7.11 or 7.11a.
Windows XP Pro, SP2 fully patched, no Windowblinds or anything fancy.

I know these sort of messages aren't hugely helpful to you Zugg and you've mentioned that you've not seen the same thing on your test systems. If there's anything I can check then let me know.

These sound like different problems. One person is getting the error when opening a new window, while the first person is getting the error when the splash screen is being displayed.

If you get the error while the splash screen is displayed, tell me what the last thing displayed in the splash screen is.

This is sounding more like an uninitialized variable problem of some kind. It sounds like the same error that some people were getting in 7.11 and it just changed to a different set of people in 7.12. If that's the case, it's going to be hard to track down since every time I recompile (like to add debug statements) the problem will change to a different set of people.

So, I need more details on exactly where in zMUD you get this error message so I can find something in common with the different reports.

Also, Robert2005, when you say:

When did it fail the first time after doing the conversion? Did it work fine until you restarted it, or did it crash after the conversion?

Also, please try downloading the 7.12a version to see if recompiling zMUD has made any difference. Also, as I mentioned with v7.11, if you are available via AIM or ICQ and willing to work on this problem with me, please email me your AIM or ICQ number and I'll contact you.
