Help with LicCtrl / runservice.exe

Hi. This might sound weird. I'm not actually a user of zMUD at all, but I vaguely remember trying it out 4 or 5 months ago and quickly uninstalling it (no offense to anyone... I just thought I was going to try this MUD thing people talk about, then decided it's not my thing).

Anyway, a month ago my computer developed a problem. All network connections would hang on startup, and using a downloading program would cause my PC to crash. I have *finally* traced the cause fo my problem: something called LicCtrl (runservice.exe). Though why it became a problem *now* I've no idea. But that's the problem item -- disabling it in msconfig lets my computer work fine.

However, I'd like to totally get rid of this thing. I don't like having to boot up in selective msconfig mode. I tried the official uninstaller that can be found on a page here, but that didn't have any effect. It didn't remove runservice.exe or anything else.

So is there some way to totally remove this thing?

zMUD is a prog I had on my PC for, like, a single evening many months ago. I don't want its remnants to cripple my PC any longer. Thanks.

There should be no affects on preformance or useabilty of other programs with this service running. Since you are not using any programs that rely on this service disabling it also should not be a problem. Completely uninstalling it is something I would not know about. In fact I would posit that completely uninstalling it is not truly possible as that would defeat its effiency as a copy protection.

Simply disabling the service tells Windows that it should not load it during boot. The only other time Windows makes any checks regarding it is when a list of all services is sought. So I would say disable it until the next time you decide to flush Windows and do a clean install.

I could help you better if I knew your version of Windows. It sounds like 2K or XP. In both cases you can permenantly disbale the service within the Adminstrative Tools/Services program.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm using XP.

LicCtrl is already set as "disabled" in administrative tools/services. However, the only way to stop my PC screwing up is to uncheck LicCtrl in msconfig's "services" list. This is annoying because I don't want to have to boot up in a selective msconfig mode all the time.

Additional info: for some weird reason, both LicCtrl and AVG antivirus must be disabled in msconfig's "services" list to stop my PC screwing up. But that's odd because I installed AVG after the problem started (in fact because the problem started, and didn't know what it was yet). I'll try uninstalling that antivirus software, but that still leaves me with an annoying LicCtrl that is the basis of all problems.

Thanks for the help. I think I'm sorted now. The removal of AVG antivirus, and the proper dsabling of LicCtrl, has fixed my problem. Seems some kind of conflict between them arose, even though AVG was installed after the problem started happening. Odd.

Thanks.
